St Mungo’s call for more night shelter volunteers

Volunteers' WeekIt's Volunteers' Week (1 - 12 June) and St Mungo's are calling on individuals who are considering giving their free time to help others to get in contact.

They are looking for volunteers to help run their much needed night shelters in Bristol, offering people a way off the streets. St Mungo's has opened 48 bed spaces since Christmas:

• 1 assessment night centre (20 bed spaces)
• 1 night shelter for people waiting for supported housing (15 bed spaces)
• 3 property guardianship projects (13 bed spaces)

Sarah Fox, volunteer coordinator at St Mungo's Compass Centre says: "We have more than 100 volunteers in Bristol. They help us to get people off the streets because of the time they give to help us provide the night shelters. They help us run the Compass Centre so our outreach workers can focus on their job and engage with clients. I am proud when I see volunteers develop, reach their goals and become amazing support workers.

"We need more volunteers to keep this service running, we offer full training and support. It's a great way for people to learn new skills particularly if you are looking to gain employment as a support worker."

Sarah is hosting a drop in session for potential new volunteers on Thursday 9 June from 10am -12 noon at 1 New St, St Judes, Bristol, BS2 9DX.
